7 Family Name Histories, (The O'Fearghaill sept held sway over the territory called Annaly, in County Longford, their seat being where the town of Longford grew up. At the end of the last century families with the name O'Farrell were outnumbered fifteen to one by Farrells who had lost the prefix. Today the Farrells are still more numerous that the O'Farrells but as many families have reassumed the prefix in this century, now one quarter to one third of the decendants of the O'Fearghaill sept are O'Farrell. The surname is amongst the commonest in Ireland and is widely distributed throughout the country. However, about two thirds of all Farrell and O'Farrell families in Ireland are in Linster and the name is still well represented in County Longford.)

Hello Bill,
Looking at my Road Atlas I found three Kirkland's in Cumberland (now
Cumbria) but looking through my CUMBRIANS in LIVERPOOL Vols - the only Ann
PRESTON b1826 was stated to be born in Blencene which isn't in my Atlas!! I
think it should be Blencarn which happens to be near a Kirkland by Penrith!!
Anyway - here she is from the Cumbrians in Liverpool:
PRESTON Ann. 1826. CUM, Blencene. HO 107/2186 F646 P 18.
I also checked my 1851 Liverpool census CD for Ann & here she is:
HO 107/2186/3. Folio 646. Toxteth.
Ann Preston. 24. Ass Housekeeper. b CUL, Bl-ne-ne?
********************************************
No addresses are given in the CD I'm afraid & as the index is in
Alphabetical order - I can't tell whether she was living on her own or as
her occupation suggests - which family she was with!!
There's no sign of her father John - sorry.
Hope this helps a little.
Kind regards,
Brenda Jones.

28 Family Name Histories, (Byrne and O'Byrne (both forms are in use) is one of the ten commonest names in Ireland, borne by about one percent of the popultaion of the Republic. The ancient territory of the O'Byrnes was in County Kildare but as Anglo Normans extenteded the Pale they were displaced and found a new home in the hills of southern County Wicklow with the sept centre at Ballinacor in the barony of Ballinacor South. Dublin County and Wicklow account for the largest number of Byrnes and O'Byrnes today and there are still a substantial representation of the name in Ballinacor South barony, in and around Aughrim and Tinahely.)
